Today was a day of giggles and funniness with the sister and mother in law! We dropped off some clothes at the Goodwill Express Donation, got Nikki some pancakes from Micky D's, and were off to Ikea. We got there before they opened and resisted the urge to partake in a late second breakfast in their upstairs cafe...although the line there was super duper long...great marketing, Ikea! We were able to find a few things while we were there. First, we found a TV table for Mikee's new apartment. We also found some new silverware and pots and pans for Nikki because she won't have any once Mikee moves out. Nikki also found some decorative wall mirrors that look like the shape of honeycomb to mount to a wall...they are tinted a rose color. Mikee also gifted us with an ADORABLE set of tea party dishes (porcelain) and silverware for Miss Monkey when she gets a little older. It was on display in this really cute child's play kitchen with dishes and everything. I'm so excited to play with our daughter and I was even more excited when I realized the teachable moment in organizing that inevitably would come with this gift: sorting the utensils by group in the silverware drawer that it came with!!! Our little girl is going to be so cute organizing her little mini-kitchen. I know I've mentioned it before, but I think that the ultrasound picture made our daughter look a little bit like her aunt Nikki. I also wanted to point out that it is fun teasing Nikki about a "mini-me" version of her on the way...she gets very overwhelmed when the idea of any big commitment comes in to play-even if it's not a commitment for HER. Anyway, I had fun teasing her today about the fact that her AND her "mini-me" bought a set of silverware today...to which she just shook her head and tried to change the subject.
I mean..come on...tell me how fun that will be to play with! We made a pit stop at Walmart after Ikea. Knowing that it's an inside joke and it never translates well to story telling, I am going to make an attempt, anyway. On our way to Walmart, I was telling Nikki that while we were there I needed to pick up a small can of white paint. To which she replied, "WHY paint." However, I heard it as, "WHITE paint?" Then Mikee and I responded together saying, "W-H-I-T-E... P-A-I-N-T." This exchange went on and on for awhile...each of us getting louder and s-l-o-w-e-r with our reply thinking that the OTHER one was a little on the "special" side of the learning curve. Finally, we realized (with some enunciation) that we were assuming wrong about what was being said. We all laughed so hard...we had been so frustrated that neither one of us were responding the way we had hoped and it just was hilarious. Okay, I admit that it's probably not that funny of a story to read about...but this reminds me of a conversation I had with my mom, back in 1996 about F-R-U-I-T-E-D... P-L-A-I-N-S...ahh, I just died laughing. Anyway, I'm sorry for telling you this story as I'm sure it's only funny to Mikee, Nikki, and I, but it was the best part of the day. I'm sure we'll continue to tease each other about it for weeks to come!
Moving on, while we were at Walmart, we picked up some groceries for Mikee to make some of her famous and delicious homemade salsa and guacamole and a few other grocery staples. Of course I had to pass by the girl's section...I swear it was RIGHT next to the dairy section...and I know you won't believe me, but I had HAD these items in boy version and was sad to have to return it a month ago when I couldn't find their female counterparts. Regardless if you believe this story I'm telling you, as soon as I saw them, I decided that for $3, I could easily get them...how could I not?!?
I know there's a chance that our little lady does not make her appearance on her New Year's Eve due date, but...if she does, I think the purple number will be cute!
This morning I was feeling as big as a house. In an attempt to look better than I feel, I decided today was the day I would dress nicely for our shopping, put on some makeup and jewelry, put on a nice maternity top, and even attempt to do my hair. After spending twenty minutes curling my hair, and burning my shoulder (I know, you're shaking your head thinking, "Only LINDSAY could burn her shoulder while curling her hair..."...but...it's sad AND true!) I realized that the last time I wore my hair down, our darling monkey girl was conceived...and I know that you can't get pregnant while pregnant, but I threw a ponytail in, just in case.
If you look at the back corner of my shoulder in the reflection, you will see the mark it left. It looks like a burn in the shape of a stripe. Lovely, eh?!? |
Some more good news to share: a friend from growing up is proud to announce she's having a girl AND a friend out here in California also found out yesterday that she is having a girl as well...Is something in the water that I don't know about it? Either way, I couldn't be happier for the both of them! I know they will have fabulous mothers and that they will be some of the cutest girls you have ever laid your eyes on!
We have decided to "bump" our Fort Point day trip up a day and do it tomorrow instead of Monday. We will be leaving early to head down to the bay. Our plan will be to park on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge overlook, walk across the bridge and down to Fort Point to explore. We can then walk back across the bridge and head off to a delicious lunch at Sweet Tomato in Pleasanthill on the way home. It's one of our favorite restaurants. If the weather is not the most agreeable, we most likely will skip the walking across the bridge portion of the plans and save that for a nicer day (which is hard to plan on in San Francisco, as the weather and visibility changes so quickly due to the fog).
There's a possibility that Tony's friends Jake and Michelle Parks (Jake was best man at our wedding) might come tomorrow to spend the night and Labor Day with us after we get back from San Francisco. They eluded to a baby gift that they wanted to drop off...so there may be more pictures, too. I will bring my camera tomorrow of our travels and if I can figure it out, I may be able to include a video from tomorrow as well...we'll see how tech-y I can get. At least the forecast is calling for a high of 69 and partially cloudy in "The City" tomorrow...cross your fingers as that is a good day by bay standards!
Lately I have been working a little here and there helping out a former high school friend organize our 10 year high school reunion surveys into a book for our reunion that is coming up October 2nd of this year. Of course with the pregnancy and vacation/money constrictions, I will not be physically a part of the festivities, so I wanted to help out in whatever way I could from a distance. For the last two months or so, anytime someone from our class has completed their "What you've been up to these last 10 years" survey, she's forwarded it on to me, where I've tweaked the layout and kept tabs on who we have/have not gotten responses from and then compiled it into book form so everyone can read about our lives post-high school. It's kind of fun to read what everyone's been up to and it's a little sad that I won't be seeing them. I also find it hard to believe that it's also been TEN years since we've graduated. It makes me feel so old to think of how many things have changed for me in these last ten years and how fast time has seemed to have gone by! Things like this really make you feel like a full-on adult!!!
While at Ikea this morning, I got a call from my friend Nicole. Her father lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday and I had been emailing and texting her but was unsure of what to say in a live conversation. I feel so terrible that I wasn't the one who made the call, but it was so nice hearing from her! The funeral is planned for Thursday, complete with Catholic mass, burial, and celebration of life memorial. Hopefully I will be able to rearrange some nannying hours to be able to attend partial or all of the day's events and show our support for a dear friend and her amazing father! I truly believe that Nicole is all of the best parts of her dad and that she will carry his spirit with her for the rest of her life and her children's lives. Mr. A was such a sincere soul and a successful father, business man, veteran, husband, fighter, and friend! "Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often, loved much, gained the respect of children, and who leaves the world better than they found it." I think that is Dan, to the "T" and I know how lucky we all are to have known him! Please keep his family in your hearts and prayers so that they may be blessed with loving memories, peace, understanding, comfort, and a sense of calm knowing that Dan is happy and watching over them, no longer in pain! He has many survivors, including his strong wife, and his two amazingly wonderful daughters.
